"Camp Abo" - Outdoor camp at the school basecamp before and/or after your field course! An alternative to a hotel, "Camp Abo" offers you the convenience of being on site, (and on time) before your field course begins while saving you money. It also allows you to leave your personal gear in one location until your field course is completed. Camp Abo amenities include a shared shower and sink, a flush toilet, picnic tables with a fire pit, trash and recycle disposal, and a .7 mile nature trail all within a beautiful rural location. Costs per person are $30 for one night (the night before your field course), or $50 for two nights (the night before and after your field course. ) Camp Abo opens at 4 PM the day before your field course starts and closes at Noon the day after your field course ends. Camp Abo camping fees are required along with your course tuition upon enrollment. You'll receive a Camp Abo map with your enrollment materials showing camping areas for tents, cars, or RV's. NOTE: Camp Abo does not have a campground host. You may be the only student camping on site. If the potential for camping alone does not work for you, please consider other lodging options.

Age limits for courses:
Students younger than 16 years old are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Younger students who are interested in challenging field courses such as the Desert Drifter are considered on a case by case basis.

A note about “gear” for classes:
The gear you’ll need for your adventure depends upon the course you choose. Even so, no ALSS class has a heavy emphasis upon modern gear. The gear required for most courses is extremely simple such as a backpack, sleeping bag or wool blanket, water bottles, knife, and extra clothing. Because our courses are taught outdoors, and weather is fickle, our gear lists remain flexible so that we can edit them for safety and effectiveness. Static, one-size-fits-all gear lists featured on some web sites ignore the reality of an ever changing wilderness. If you’re worried about not having the right equipment, remember, the ALSS experience revolves around doing more with less, not buying expensive gear.

ALSS Cancellation and Refund Policy:
Upon enrolling in any ALSS course, if YOU cancel a course for any reason at any time, 50% of your tuition is non-refundable.

In addition, if YOU cancel a course 60 to 30 days from the course dates...
To maintain the highest quality of hands-on instruction possible, each ALSS program enrolls a limited number of students. When you choose to enroll in one of these precious slots, and then cancel near the course run date, you prevent other potential students from enjoying the experience. Also, while “invisible” to the student, much time and money is spent preparing for you to attend a course. Our cancellation and refund policy reflect the fact that it’s impossible to recover these up-front costs. Please note that there is a non-refundable $100 processing fee per course. This is NOT an extra fee and is built-in to the course tuition. In addition to the 50% non-refundable tuition and the $100 processing fee:

  • If you cancel 60 days or less prior to the course dates.....half tuition refund in addition to the $100 processing fee.
  • If you cancel 30 days or less prior to the course dates.....no refund can be given. No exceptions.

-Students who leave a course once it has begun due to sickness, evacuation or any other reason, will NOT be entitled to a refund. No exceptions.
-Students who cancel a course may NOT apply the tuition to another course. No exceptions.
-Students who fail to show up on time and miss the course will NOT be entitled to a refund. No exceptions.

If WE cancel a course...
If ALSS cancels a course, a full tuition refund will be given. ALSS assumes no responsibility for any additional expenses incurred by you as a result of cancellation.

Trip Insurance!
We recommend that you purchase a travel protection plan to help protect you and your travel investment against the unexpected. Aside from reimbursing some or all of your tuition and travel expenses, trip insurance can also help with field evacuation, medical expenses, lost or late baggage and more. As an example, www.insuremytrip.com and others work with several travel insurance providers to get you the right provider and plan at the best price.
